Until relatively recently (which is to say, in brewing terms, the early 1700s), most beers were smoked; a natural byproduct of the methods employed to kiln the malted barley. ‘Rauch’ is the German word for ‘smoke’ and it is from that country which this beer draws inspiration. The malt’s sweetness is complemented by the light beech wood smoke, which also imparts a subtle nuttiness to the beer’s fireside taste. A modest addition of traditional hops from the Hallertau region round out the beer’s flavour. Pour it into a glass so you can get lost in the burnt sienna hue of this remarkably historical, yet endlessly quaffable, brew. Prost!
Lightly smoky aroma. Honey-malt sweet, brought out by the pronounced - but not overpowering - nutty smokiness from the beech wood smoke. Low bitterness with a lingering finish.
