Keg cleaning and evacuation

It’s really important that the kegs you bring in must be CLEAN. That means they need to be thoroughly sanitised, rinsed and evacuated with CO2 gas.

We spend a great deal of time and effort brewing the best craft beer possible. Any residue or bugs in the keg or growler will spoil the new beer. And any air in the keg will oxidise the beer, dramatically affecting the quality, taste, and shelf-life of the beer.

The good news is you can do this at home with very little effort. Just follow the step-by-step instructions below to properly clean your keg prior to bringing it to us.

Keg not CLEAN? We can do it for you. If you’re buying a FULL keg of our beer, our experts can do a complete sanitisation and evacuation of your kegs. This makes sure the beer you go home with tastes as fresh as they day you bought it.

Please note: We don’t offer keg cleaning as a standalone service. You must be buying a full keg of our beer to take advantage of this service.

At-home keg cleaning instructions

1.
Vent the keg to ensure no pressure then release the lid and fill the keg with water to flush out any residual carbon dioxide gas.

2.
Empty the keg completely and put in one tablespoon of Napisan and half a kettle of boiling water.

3.
After adding the water and Napisan, restore the lid tightly and shake it for 20 seconds until the inside is completely soaked.

4.
After the first shake, connect the beer/liquid connector onto the “out” or the “beer” connection for a second or two to release some cleaning fluid up the spear. Be careful not to get the squirt of liquid onto anything or anyone. If you get any Napisan on your hands simply wash it off.

5.
Give the keg a few more shakes over the course of 5 minutes then pressure it up a bit with CO2 and flush the contents through your kegerator lines, taking care to pull some through each line at least twice.

If you haven’t for CO2, put boiling water and Napisan into the keg and repeat. This will keep your beer lines clean and the beer tasting fresh. We highly recommend this step is used to clean the lines on your bar but if you prefer to do it differently then simply release the pressure in the keg, rinse out the contents. No matter which way you go once you are done and the keg is rinsed, completely fill the keg with water (right to the very top).

6.
Once full, put the lid back into place, put 100kPa pressure back onto the keg and release the pressure relief valve on the lid twice to expel any residual air.

7.
The last step is to connect the beer/liquid connector to the keg while gas pressure is applied to the keg to empty out all the water.

This procedure should take about 20 minutes all up. It ensures your keg is spotlessly clean and has no residual air inside that would otherwise spoil your beer.

Why Napisan? It’s a fairly safe alkaline cleaner that uses Sodium Percarbonate as a cleaner and an oxidiser, which means it is a dual-purpose cleaner and sanitiser.
